Maytag A512 or Kenmore 110 Series. I have both washers and id like to get rid of one, which is better?

The Maytag is brass and the kenmore has had some work done to it. They are both 5+ years old and they both work fine. I want to sell one of them but i'm not sure which is better. Any ideas?Maytag A512 or Kenmore 110 Series. I have both washers and id like to get rid of one, which is better?
actually the Kenmore is easier and less expensive to repair so I would keep that one and sell the Maytag....I was a sears technician for years and have done many repairs on washers...and know for a fact parts availablity and repairs are less expensive and easily accessibleMaytag A512 or Kenmore 110 Series. Think about which is easier to repair, and keep that one.

Water heater is too hot and my faucet washers get mushy?

I noticed my faucet washers don't last long on the hot side of my valves. I think it is because the water is too hot or maybe my washers aren't very good. The faucset seat has been replaced, it is just that the washer on the hot side gets mushy. What is the recommended temp to have the water heater set at? What is the best brand of flat faucet washers to buy?Water heater is too hot and my faucet washers get mushy?
It seems most leaky faucets are due to washers on the Hot side. It might be due to sediment/minerals in the Hot Water Tank that break down the washers faster. (Wells are bad for this too)

We use ';Delta'; washersWater heater is too hot and my faucet washers get mushy?
Keep your hot water tank set at about 120 degrees F. This is hot enough for any household use, and has the added benefit of reducing the seriousness of scalding (especially for children). You will also use less electricity (or gas) to heat your water.

I don't know what the best brand of washer is, a good plumbing supply store should be able to help you. Or go with a washerless faucet set.
Hot water needs to be no higher than 120F. Anything more is really a waste. (as long as it meets your need)

The best washers are the ones that have no writing on them.

Check both sides. (hard to find)

How many washers of three different sizes can I fit onto a rod 3.873 in long?

I have a bar 3.873 in. long. I must slide as many washers as possible onto it, leaving the least amount of space. The three thicknesses of the washers are .213 in, .207 in, .204 in. How many of each thickness do I use and how do I model the equations. How many washers of three different sizes can I fit onto a rod 3.873 in long?
If your goal is to maximize the number of washers on the rod, then it makes sense to only add washers of the smallest thickness. So keep adding the 0.204 inch washers. Divide 3.873 by 0.204 and drop the remainder to see how many of these you can fit.How many washers of three different sizes can I fit onto a rod 3.873 in long?
I don't see the aim is to put on as many washers as possible but to leave as little space as possible. To do that I cant see how to do it better than 18 of the .213'; washers, leaving .039'; spare.

Do pressure washers that attach to garden hoses have enough pressure to clean dirty decks?

What kind of psi can they hit? How much do they typically cost to rent?Do pressure washers that attach to garden hoses have enough pressure to clean dirty decks?
I don't know how much the cost to rent I think home Depot is like 20/hr and they work really well on decks, house siding, concrete.Do pressure washers that attach to garden hoses have enough pressure to clean dirty decks?
Take a garden sprayer and spray your deck with clorox first and hose off with garden hose, you will be supprised how clean it will get. I do this to my wood fences on a regular basis to keep clean. Be careful with the pressure washer as too much pressure can make them rough and hairy looking. Like the other person on here said rent one, because once you pressure wash everything you own it will sit for a long time. I may have used mine 2 -3 times in the five years I have owned it.
Yes, a garden hose works perfect. And the PSI depends on the machine you rent and the tip you use on the gun. And as far as price's I'm not too sure what it cost to rent one.

Note: You don't what to use too high of a PSI if your power washing your deck because it will cut lines in the wood and tear it up. So start with a low PSI and work your way up trying it out in one spot so you don't mess up your deck until you find the results you want.

Also here's a link to a good video tutorial on how to power wash properly.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqZhDsxCx鈥?/a>
Yes they do and do a great job of it if used properly. The psi you are looking for is 2400 and get one that has the changeable tips on it.the one that sprays a wide fan is the one to use.As for renting I don't know how muck it cost.I I went yo home depot and bought mine for four hundred and fifty dollars.I have three decks on my house so it was better to own.
Absolutely not. I have had one and asked around, everyone I know that has bought one says they suck. It will get the job done, but, it will take forever. Also, once you use it on the deck the driveway and house, it just sits in the garage. Do yourself a favor and rent a Professional one for a weekend and save a few bucks.

I have a toilet where the internal overflow keeps running. I have changed washers, adjusted the ball cock -?

I have changed the diaphragm washers and the ring washer, I have adjusted the ball cock and the water level - it was a drip at first but now runs constantly like a tap that has been leve on - has anyone any ideas?I have a toilet where the internal overflow keeps running. I have changed washers, adjusted the ball cock -?
not much experience of them, I have one and it constantly drips but seems fine enoughI have a toilet where the internal overflow keeps running. I have changed washers, adjusted the ball cock -?
shut the **** up Report Abuse

As others have suggested, change the valve, it sounds like it is passing water even when ball should be closing it.
Sounds as if the whole thing is worn out - buy a new fill valve assembly.
Replace the guts in the tank,it's only about $15,and easy to do.
replace ballcock w/ new one or the overflow tube is busted.
if the ballkok is fully submersed then the valve is not working. you may need to replace the whole thing...
If you lift the float arm, does the water stop? I suspect not. I think you need a new valve assembly.
    change the fill valve
The whole thing needs replacing. They don't cost much.

Don't tell me they're censoring the word ball cock now. Oh ppplease!!
I've had the same problem before, you just have to face the fact that no matter what you do things wear out, just get a new one.

If you live in Australia, go to Bunnings or a hardware store and get a Fluid Master, they are just so much better than the conventional type.
Spend less than ten dollars and replace the stand inside the tank and don't drive yourself nuts with this. The water you waste will cost more. Make sure you replace the flapper too. That may be the source of your problem.

Guitar washers fell off electric guitar where you plug in amp?

I took out my electric guitar today and tried to plug it into the amp with the cord and the plug wouldn't stay in the guitar. I noticed a nut and a washer on the plug and I screwed them back onto the guitar then plugged it in and tried playing it and it didn't work.

Can someone please help?Guitar washers fell off electric guitar where you plug in amp?
I agree with Tom, it is possible you have broken the wire connected to the plug inside the guitar.

Remove the nut again and gently pull out the connector far enough to make sure both the wires are still connected to the jack.

If one is broken, you will need to have the wire soldered back onto the jack.

Just stripping the wire back and twisting it onto the connector would work as a quick fix, but you really need to have it soldered. Hopefully you or a friend knows how to do it. Or possibly your dad has a solder iron.

You don't say what kind of guitar it is, but if it's a Strat like guitar, it is really easy to fix. I haven't worked on another type of guitar like that for 30 years, so I don't remember how easy it is for a les paul type.

Lots of times there is a small scratch guard around the jack, so you can remove the guard to more easily access the wires.

Good LuckGuitar washers fell off electric guitar where you plug in amp?
I'm only guessing but I think when you tightened the nut back up you spun the plug and broke the wire connection. take the nut back off without spinning the plug then ease it out of the guitar and check connection, you may have to reconnect

  • How do i adjust my windshield washers?

I have a 95 Bonneville. Ant when i hit the button for the windshield washers it sprays way over to the trunk? How do i adjust them! I saw a screw on the but it dosent do anyhing but let lhem loose? Any help would be appreciated. TYHow do i adjust my windshield washers?
raise the hood up and you can see the jets attached a little better. You should be able to gently bend them down where you need them to point. that screw just holds them to the car.How do i adjust my windshield washers?
Pay attention where the water comes out when you squirt them and determine where it's coming from. (I don't know about the Bonny). Then look and you will see a round steel ball about the size of a BB and it will have a hole in it. You can stick a pin in the hole and move the ';ball'; around. This will adjust where it sprays.

How do professional window washers wash windows?

What do they use as a window cleaner? How do professional window washers wash windows?
They can use a couple of different methods. First is to use a squeegee. They have a cleaning solution that's like Windex in a bucket of water and a mop-like cleaning attachment on the end of a stick. They then use this to scrub the window clean. Then then use the squeegee to remove the excess water and use a towel to get whatever drips they can.

Another method, is to use a similar cleaning attachment at the end of a long, telescoping pole. But, the attachment has a supply hose of deionized water going to it. They then scrub the glass with the deionized water and let it air dry. The deionized water does not streak or leave a residue (like water spots) when it dries. So, the window comes out spotless when it's dry.

For spot cleaning, they use industrial spray cans of window cleaning foam. But, the squeegee or deionized water method is the best, since they take all the dirt and any residue off of the glass. Using window cleaning sprays just pushes the dirt and stuff along the glass, which is what causes the streaking.

What are tooth lock washers and fender washers in the UK ?

Using an American guide-book to some amateur building projects. It's a very good book but the jargon is different in the UK. Does anyone know what the above would be called in Britain? What are tooth lock washers and fender washers in the UK ?
well the way I perceive this is that they are what we call in GB shake proof washers which are shaped like normal washers but they are ribbed to stay tight under vibration the washers mentioned above are called tab washersWhat are tooth lock washers and fender washers in the UK ?
.Tooth lock washers I would say are what we call tit washers, they have a tit that fits into a groove in the bolt, they were used mainly on heavy vehicle door hinges, the ones that turned on a brass ball. Fender washers I think are what we call wing washers, they are normal flat washers but are about one and a half ins in diameter and are used when a fixing bolt has been torn through the sheet metal, yes I am often lost with these strange words.
use these with castellated nuts...tighten nut and torque then bend tab from washerb inti keyway on shaft this stops nut coming undone

My wife has a laundry question. She has a comforter that says ';wash in commercial front load washers';.

The comforter is made of a ';down alternative';. Is it acceptable to wash this at home? Will it harm the comforter at all?My wife has a laundry question. She has a comforter that says ';wash in commercial front load washers';.
Definitely make a trip to the laundromat. Unless it is a twin comforter, I would not wash it in a front load home washer (those would be fine). The front load huge capacity washers at the laundromat are going to handle it much better, it needs room to move around so that it gets washed well throughout. Additionally, the washers there are considered ';extractors'; and will spin at a much higher speed, making drying much easier. The dryers there are much larger as well, although I do recommend taking it out mid-cycle and rearranging it so that it doesn't stay in the same spot and keep wet spots. Good luck!My wife has a laundry question. She has a comforter that says ';wash in commercial front load washers';.
If you have a large capacity washer it should be fine to do it at home if not just take it to the laundry mat and wash it there. Dont forget to follow all the insturctions on the lable.
using a common household clothes washer won't be good for your comforter. the agitator in the center of the machine is the problem. spend a couple bucks and take it to a place where they have commercial washers. you'll be happy with the results
If you have a top loading washer, it will rip the blanket to shreds after having balled the insides up. You are supposed to use the extra large front load washer at the laundromat because it won't rip up your blanket or break the drum loose inside your home front loader that is not made for things so big.
commercial machines have a larger capacity than domestic ones, thats why it says that

squashing it in may not be a good idea, but take it to a laundrette and wash it there and bring it home to dry it
I have a top load washer and I wash my comforters in it. It's a fairly large capacity washer. Just don't wash anything else with it and wash it on the gentle cycle.
yes absulety you can use ,well comforter is use to soften your clothes and amell nice only when u use detergent u have to worry much
it won't hurt the comforter, but your washing machine is a different issue. They say a commercial washer because it has a larger capacity
You need a machine with a large capacity tub.

Could wash it at home but it would be very hard on your washer. For the little it costs,I'd go to the laundromat and be safe.
it is probably too large to wash adequately in a residential washer and well worth the money to have it cleaned professionally.
Front load washers tumble items. Top loaders twist and pull items.

Comforters can be too large to wash in a home machine. This doesn't mean that you have to pay for someone else to wash the item. Commercial front loaders can be found at laundromats and are around $3 per load. The fill in the comforter is less likely to shift in a front loader, plus commercial dryers are huge, and will allow a large item to tumble properly.

Dry on low/delicate setting. Wash warm/cold.
I had one like that. At first I would take it to the cleaners but had to wait a week to get it back. I started washing it in my washer, I have a large size washer but that was not good.

    It started getting lumpy.

If I were you, I would take it to the cleaners....especially if you really like the comforter.
The reason it says to do that is because the comforter is too much for a regular washer to handle. It will make the comforter ball up on the inside of the material and make it look lumpy. If you have a front loading washer (one without an agitator) it will be okay for you to wash it at home.

BA is a british aircraft industry standard (old). You use to be able to buy sockets ranging from 0BA to 8BA.( 0BA is the largest) although actually not that big. I don't think that there is a metric, American or britsh equivelant socket. Some of these sockets can fit loosely but frequent use will damage the nuts or bolt heads. What size is 2ba or 0ba when reffering to nuts and washers?

How do you remove the hot and cold handles to replace washers from a bathroom faucet?

You will need a screwdriver to remove the handles, and you will need an adjustable crescent wrench to remove the valve. Be sure you turn off the shut-off valves under the sink before you do this! Then you just unscrew the valve (counterclockwise), replace the washer, and screw it back in again, making sure it is tight. Put on the handles, turn them on to check for leaks. If you don't already have the replacement washers, and you don't know exactly what kind to get, just take the whole valve into a plumbing or building/hardware supply store and they'll help you find the right ones. How do you remove the hot and cold handles to replace washers from a bathroom faucet?
most of the time u don't have to loosen the pacing nut replace washer that's all.How do you remove the hot and cold handles to replace washers from a bathroom faucet?
Take a close up picture of the knobs and one of the faucet with your cell phone cam.

Go to your local hardware store and they should be able to show you exactly how to do it.
remove the buttons that say H and C under that is a screw remove this and pull off the handles if they are stuck there is a tool that can help you remove them at your hardware store
close the main faucet first. Then you can replace the washers.
It depends on the brand, but basically...

there is a tiny screw holding the handle onto the stem. Sometimes its under a cap on top (under the H for hot) or its under the handle barely noticable. It will be soo small that only a eyeglass screwdriver will be able to get to it. You get thos off and take them to the hardware store. You will need them to math up the replacements. Inside the replacements you will find instructions. If you are having some leaks you can unscrew the stem and get some replacement washers at this point as well. Its really not too complicated, the items can only go back in one way. Just make sure to turn off the water at the shut off valves under the sink first.

    Good Luck,

How did the dual-action auger style agitators become so popular for top load clothes washers?

I never saw anything wrong with the standard post agitators as long as I didn't overload the tub, and they didn't take up as much space in the tub because they didn't have auger fins. How did the dual-action auger style agitators become so popular for top load clothes washers?
The new agitators were intended to move the clothes through the water more aggressively for better cleaning. I would also bet they are cheaper to manufacture than the previous ones.

Note that this has nothing to do with the front load ';energy saving'; washers which don't need much effort to get the clothes moving through the water because they use gravity for that action. They are an overpriced scam caused by congress not thinking through the consequences of legislation intended to save energy. How did the dual-action auger style agitators become so popular for top load clothes washers?
Because of the simple reliable design.

I am not a fan of the ';new'; front loaders we were forced into for ';energy savings'; because the added complexity and mechanical losses built into the design. Ever study the power flow in a front load washer? Maybe you are saving water, but the increased parts counts and extra manufacturing required to produce them requires more resources of the environment than previous models. Not to mention the facts of not lasting as long; and needing more repairs during its lifetime.

Imagine filling landfills with the older models because the government says it is obsolete and parts can no longer be manufactured. Makes no sense to me. Another big scam in my opinion.

Any recommendations on new washers and dryers?

I've been really pleased with my LG set. They are quiet, reliable and work great! I got a washer that also will dry the load of clothes and a companion regular dryer.

It's amazing to go to bed with a load of towels in the washer at night and to wake up to them dry!

I would recommend that whatever you get, you consider frontloaders. They save A LOT of water and wear and tear on your clothes. My clothes come out cleaner. The original cost is a little higher, but I find the extra price worth it.Any recommendations on new washers and dryers?

';Roper'; is a good brand. they are part of the whirlpool corporation, they are reasonably priced and they are supposed to last a really long time. plus their construction is very simple and if you need to fix it the repairs are simple. i haven't heard or seen any complaints about them
My personal opinion and experience is that you should purchase the simplest, stripped down version of both. The simple versions perform well, last longer and are cheaper and easier to repair when they go down. I'd rather nix all the bells and whistles and have less headaches.
    Buy Bosch !

I got them for the same price as frigidaire front loaders. They are super !

Check out the last years model as they are usually the same quality and will sell for 100- 150 less then the current model
    Sears is very high priced.

Lowes, Home Depot, Circuit City and Fredder seem to beat them out on all appliances.

I have the Whirlpool Duet W/D. (Front loader washer).

I love them. They cost more than top load models, but the clothes are much cleaner and I use less water. The front load washer also spins so much more water out of the clothes in the spin cycle, that my dryer only runs about 35 minutes on average. I can also wash large items like quilts in the front loader that would normally have to go to the laundry mat.
The front loaders are the hot ones now, but they cost a lot of money (over $1K per unit). They are more energy efficient and are easier on your cloths.

The drawback is that they spin really really fast. If they aren't placed on a really stable floor (concrete), they will shake your whole house.

None of the appliances out now are of the same quality they were built with 20 years ago. I have a 20 year old Maytag washer that still works fine. I've been through 2 dryers in the last 8 years. I got a new GE dryer (gas) when I moved into my current house. It died after about 5 years and am now on the 2nd.

  • How do I test electrical and electronic components on washers and dryers with a digital VOM?

I want to learn this just to repair and resale out of my garage.

Thank's for anybody's help and GOD bless you.How do I test electrical and electronic components on washers and dryers with a digital VOM?
There are lots of functions on a VOM, but you will use the AC and DC voltage, ohm, and continuity funtctions most often. The voltage funtions will tell you if a part is getting power and what that voltage is. The Ohm funtions tell you the reistance of sensors or other aparts and let you know if there in spec or need repalced. The continuity funtion simple tells you if the wire or part between the probes is letting current pass through it. REMEMBER NEVER TEST THE RESISTANCE OR CONTINUITY OF A LIVE CIRCUIT!! You might just blow a fuse in the meter or blow the whole meter up in your hand!! Many meters now have temp probes and can help you find problems with dryer air flow or heating elements.

There's not enough time or space here to tell you how to test all the parts or diagnose problems in appliances with your meter, but I would suggest investing in 2 books to help you out. The first is a simple VOM how to book you can get at Radio Shack and the other would be one of the Time Life type of repair how to books that include appliances. Both of these books will teach you most ways to use your VOM to diagnose problems and then repair what you find. You've got a great idea to make some extra money and I wish you lots of luck!!

We use this size at work and i would like to buy a socket for it but sockets are sold in mmWhat size is 2ba or 0ba when reffering to nuts and washers?
BA is a british aircraft industry standard (old). You use to be able to buy sockets ranging from 0BA to 8BA.( 0BA is the largest) although actually not that big. I don't think that there is a metric, American or britsh equivelant socket. Some of these sockets can fit loosely but frequent use will damage the nuts or bolt heads. What size is 2ba or 0ba when reffering to nuts and washers?
There is a product called ';GATOR Socket'; one socket fits many different sizes, can be purchased at Walmart or any home supply store

How do I test electrical and electronic components on washers and dryers with a digital VOM?

Fender washers I think are what we call wing washers, they are normal flat washers but are about one and a half ins in diameter and are used when a fixing bolt has been torn through the sheet metal, yes I am often lost with these strange words.

Why are ';locking washers'; necessary when bolting two pieces of wood together?

What would happen if I didn't use one? I'm bolting together pieces of wood and do not have enough clearance to use a washer and a locking washer - how bad would that be?Why are ';locking washers'; necessary when bolting two pieces of wood together?
PlainJane offers some valid suggestions. Lock washers are designed primarily for PARTS that are likely to move in some way, or vibrate. Since we don't know any details about the two pieces of wood you want to bolt together; it may be a useless effort to LOCK the nut to the bolt.

Another answer suggests countersink, which is also a valid suggestion. Lock nuts can also be used, but again, without knowing your intent; any and all advise here might be considered.

Steven WolfWhy are ';locking washers'; necessary when bolting two pieces of wood together?
you don't need locking washers, not in the uk anyway, but it is advisable to put some form of jagged edged washer between the two timbers on every bolt, it helps prevent any movement between the two timbers. and between the nut and the timber it is also advisable to place a large washer. this is purely to prevent the nut drawing into the timber to far when tightening...
Lock washers hold pressure on the nut so it won't loosen, if you left them off you possibly might have to tighten them occasionally not a big deal. An alternative elastic stop nuts they never loosen or rarely.
Not as important as on metal installations, like gates, parts subject to vibrations, etc. The suggestion to use a 'locking nut' is right-on'; it's a nut with a plastic or nylon insert that resists the bolt from loosening. You can also use LocTite...but choose wisely: there are 2 types of it, one is removable, the other is permanent.

If the wood is thick enough, you could countersink a hole just deep enough to accommodate a lock-washer, flat washer and the nut.
Buy a lock nut. They have a couple different types. Using it with the fender washer will be all you need. Locktite will work but is way more expensive than a lock nut. If you only need one lock nut just buy that instead.
Try using a flat washer. This will keep the nut and bolt from drawing itself into the wood when you tighten them.

The gas operated ones, allow you to take them anywhere, while with an electric, your restricted by the extension cord. What are the advantages of electric pressure washers over those that operate on gas or propane?
none. electric heating of water for a pressure washer would be more expensive to operate.

What are the most likely reasons an apartment complex would not allow residents to have washers or dryers?

The apartments where I live don't have washer or dryer hook-ups in the actual apartments, but there's a laundry room that any of the residents can use.

I respect the rules, but what are the reasons behind them? Are dryers generally considered fire hazards? Do washers unreasonably increase the chance of water damage? Do the machines make too much noise?

Even slightly relevant thoughts, ideas, and opinions are welcome. What are the most likely reasons an apartment complex would not allow residents to have washers or dryers?
It is the power load, a dryer can not operate on standard power. Noise might be an issue, but access to appropriate power is the more logical problem. What are the most likely reasons an apartment complex would not allow residents to have washers or dryers?
Most apartments are not geared to a washer and dryer hookup with the plumbing and electrical work involved.. The cost to have these hookups are prohibitive and most land lords do not want to undertake this as they would have to raise the rent.

Apartments built awhile back were too small to incorporate washer and dryer hookups.

If the landlord provide coin operated washer and dryers for the tenants use. You are not required to use these washer and dryer. You might find wash houses in parts of the city.

In some of your higher end apartments there are provisions for washer and dryer hookups. For this convenience the rents are raised.

If you are seeking a washer and dryer hookup and this is very important to you, I suggest that you try renting a house instead of a house. Make sure the house you decide to rent have a washer and dryer hookup prior to moving into the house.

I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.

    ';FIGHT ON';
it would cost them too much for any additional plumbing and wireing they would have to put in so you could have a washer/dryer in unit.

plus if the machines in the laundry room are coin opperated, thats more profit for the apartment complex. if they put washer/dryer in unit, they would not only have to spend all the money to get the hookups actually hooked up, but they would loose any profit the coin machines were generating
They don't want the expense of adding the extra plumbing and electrical.

Yes, some people don't have enough sense to do laundry during the day and the noise will bother other tennants.

Yes, there is a great risk of water damage from washer malfunctions.

And, they can make a few bucks off of the coin operated machines.
Ahh..You don't have any ';hook - ups'; would be a very good reason...

Does it cost to use the laundry room machines? If so , this is likely the reason and I would get my own machines otherwise you have answered your own question.

I would not think any judge would let this landlord charge you for something they are denying you but, again, you have no hook-up's...?
Electrical load limits. Dryer exhausts. Plumbing supply and drain lines. If such hookups were not incorporated into the facility design, you can't use such appliances. Typical apartments do not have such hookups.
    Hi,

You answered your own question. Fire and water damage is the correct reason why. Plus the added cost to have hook-ups in each unit is too expensive.
Two main concerns 1) increase water consumption, which I will assume the landlord pays the water and sewer bill 2) the potential for water damage
    water usage

    flooding, damage

    noise

  • What makes open-on-the-side washers more energy efficient than washers that open on the top?

washer as in, a clothes washer (washer and dryer). What makes open-on-the-side washers more energy efficient than washers that open on the top?
They use less hot water. A top-loading washer has to fill almost up to the top to get all the clothes wet. A front-loader only needs a little water in the bottom, and all the clothes will tumble through it as the drum rotates. What makes open-on-the-side washers more energy efficient than washers that open on the top?
Yes on the less water to wash the clothes. And the centrifugal force of the spin gets the clothes much cleaner, using less water, less electricity. So all around it saves energy and natural resources. Plus they are easier on the back, almost no bending.
They use less water and it takes less kinetic energy (start the movement energy) to roll the drum around than to wiggle the agitator (thing in the middle of a top loading machine). It is called a front loader, by the way!
Yes to what others have said, but with one caveat - front loaders do not accept nearly as large a load as top loaders, and they take a lot longer to finish a load of laundry.
It`s not because how they open. One uses a lot more water than the other. And more power to spin more water out so there is Less dry time.

Will car washers hurt my new pinstripes I had placed on my vehicle?

I just had new pinstripes placed on my car using the taped on kind. Will I be able to take my car through a car wash now or will it tear the pinstripes off? Will car washers hurt my new pinstripes I had placed on my vehicle?
Yes, you can take it to the car wash and no the car wash should not tear the pinstripes off. My truck has pinstripes and I take it to the car wash all of the time and have never had a problem with them coming off. Will car washers hurt my new pinstripes I had placed on my vehicle?
it should,nt if you don,t hold too much pressure against them. do like i do. i put a dab of super glue at the ends of them.

How well do front loader tumble washers perform over top loader spinners?

I have a front loader tumbler now and it doesnt make any noise at all and it jus sits there and spins haha. My old one was a top load with the cuts in it so it would like massage the clothes with the spinner thing. Is there any difference in the way they clean? which one cleans better, if theres a difference. How well do front loader tumble washers perform over top loader spinners?
Actually, tumble washers have it all over front loaders. I know it doesn't seem like they do anything, but they clean better, use half the soap and way less water. They tumble the clothes against each other instead of using an agitator to beat up the clothes so they also make your clothes last longer. The only downside is that they cost more, but they are so much more cost efficient it's worth it in the long run.How well do front loader tumble washers perform over top loader spinners?
As far as I know, the difference between two types lies in our thought. Both work same type. If one model has a higher investment cost, it has low maintainance and running cost. On the other hand if we go for lower investment cost, the running cost is a bit higher. In my opinion it is purely psychological.
i have frontloaders, and mine actually does make quite a bit of noise, especially since its on the main floor of our home i notice it. i hear it when its going through all the cycles. i think it works alot better compared to the old top loading ones. i think some were actually designed to be quieter too.

Is there a cleaning regimen for clothes washers?

Is there something cleaning maintenance wise I need to do to my washer? Is there a cleaning regimen for clothes washers?
I just wipe mine out with a clean cloth. If there is dirt I spray 409 on a clean cloth and wipe it out...No problem!!!Is there a cleaning regimen for clothes washers?
yes there is and it works wonders--- go to walmart or a grocery store and pick up a bottle of rust remover --run your washer full of hot water and put half of the rust remover in and let it set for 20 minutes ,then let it run its cycle,I do it at least 1 time every 6 mos. cause we have well water.
There is a product made by GE called Washermagic that works realy well on calcium, lime, rust, grease and soapscum. Yes you should at least every three months run your washer through a clean with this product or bleach to keep mold and mildew down in front load washers and soapscum etc in top load washers.

    Appliance Guy.
just put it through the wash cycle with no clothing in it and a scoop of powder or cup of bleach that is what my manual for my machine says to do
Leave the lid open after using it to let it dry out.

Does anyone remember the sudsmeiser on the washers?

I think that's what it was called. It was where the water from the rinse cycle was emptied into your utility tub instead of down the drain, and if it wasn't that dirty, you could use it again. You would think that in this day of reuse, recycle, we would see more of that coming back. Do these washers still exist?Does anyone remember the sudsmeiser on the washers?
I do remember them but as of yet they have not reappeared on the market. It was a good idea.Does anyone remember the sudsmeiser on the washers?
I might use the recycled H20 in the garden, but I certainly wouldn't make a soup with it.
If you really wanted to take advantage of the washer rinse water you could devise a way to catch that water and use it with a little ingenuity. If your laundry room has one of those deep sinks you could put the hose over there and let it catch the water etc.

What are the pros and cons between top loading and front loading clothes washers?

I would like to get feedback from people who have owned both types of machines.

I also would like to know if anyone has experienced any significant differences between front-loading clothes washers that are of American design (e.g. Whirlpool) as opposed to European design (e.g. Miele)What are the pros and cons between top loading and front loading clothes washers?
Although I have never owned one, I have been doing my own laundry in laundromats that have both machines. I find that the front loaders give a much more thorough wash than the top loaders. The reason is quite simple: top loaders just swish around the soaped water while the front loader actually tumbles the clothes time and time again into the soapy water, giving the clothes kind of a 'pounding' in the suds. This difference is especially significant since we wind up more often than not stuff our machines to capacity (or even above a lot of the time) and the clothes don't get a chance to move around. In a front loader, the water will still be moving around in and around the clothes. Unlike in regular washers where if overstuffed, the water swisher will not allow the clothes to get as clean. (And just for fun, you can watch your clothes wash in the front loaders.)

The only con with the front loaders is that once the cycle has started, you can't open it up to throw in anything you may have forgotten. Another thing is you have to be careful that your clothing doesn't get snagged in the door. Otherwise, your piece of clothing will just twist around, stuck there and not get washed properly. But hey, learn to be careful and get a better wash!

As far as American versus European, I don't know of any differences. The only thing I do know is that the ones that are both washer and dryer in one unit tend to break more easily and aren't as reliable. What are the pros and cons between top loading and front loading clothes washers?
I have owned both top and front loading washing machines (both American made - Kenmore). Although I like the top loader, I LOVE MY FRONT LOADER AND WOULD NOT TRADE IT FOR THE WORLD. It does a great job, it uses very little water and detergent....
I've owned American (Maytag, Kenmore) and European (Bosch, Miele, LG) front and top loaders. The European models I had were equipped with many more settings than the American made models were at the time. But, because I was living in Germany, the machines they make for household use over there had much smaller capacities. The biggest difference is really between top loaders and front loaders. If you do a lot of stain removal, front loaders allow you check the garments, re-treat, add laundry additives once the machine is full without it leaking out on the floor. Because I purchase a lot of vintage linens and clothing, I prefer the front loader because I often have to treat these items often during the course of laundering.
First and foremost is your back. The top loader requires a lot of bending and stooping to put clothes in and take them out.

An ideal washer and dryer would be side by side and raised so you have no bending and stooping at all.
I like the front load because you don't have the tube in the middle like top loaders. Clothes and straps get wrapped around that and sometimes ruin the clothes. Also, when the clothes are wet and have to be removed from top loader, you are pulling on your clothes and stretching them. Here is little information on top load vs. front load which I found on a website that you can enter by clicking on the link at the end of the article.

Front Load Vs Top Load Washer - Which One To Choose

Anyone who has bought a new washing machine, would, at some stage have to had picked between a front and top load washer. Some people will swear a top load is the way to go, however there are others who will chant just as hard for the front load.

    Top Load Washers

The top load washer has been the market leader in terms of washing machines for many years. They are common in many households, and have been the first choice for many people purchasing a washing machine.

The top load is great for anyone who doesn鈥檛 have much time; one main advantage is that it is much quicker to wash your clothes. Your cycle will generally be finished much quicker than if it was done in a front load washer. Another main advantage is that the top load is right in front of you, and you don鈥檛 have to bend down to put your clothes in. This may be ok if you鈥檙e young and don鈥檛 have a bad back, however a lot of older people would rather not bend over when they have the choice.

Although at this point the top load seems the way to go, like anything there are some disadvantages. One is they use a lot of water, and we know that today this is a very vital factor. Water conservation is more important than ever, and if you purchase a top load, forget getting any kind of rebate from the government except for the odd one or two machines new two the market place. Another disadvantage is that they are hard on your clothes, from experience I know this, I found even after a couple of months my t-shirts were stretched and almost ready for the gym pile. You can get top loaders without the agitator but these machines do not achieve the greatest wash results.

    Front Load

Front load washers were in older days used heavily in commercial businesses, however now days they are smaller, more affordable and better looking, which make them a great household washer.

The front loads main advantage is the water conversation, while the top load lacks in this category, the front load exceeds. The front load uses up to 60% less water and up to 68% less energy than conventional top loading machines, saving you on those electricity bills. As well as the water conservation front loads are much gentler on your clothes. The main reasons for this are because they have a drum with no agitator, and your clothes will not get caught and stretch.

While front loaders hit the lead with their water conservation, they fall back again with their longer wash cycles. There are models out these days with quick wash cycles; however this is only effective with lightly soiled fabrics like sheets, as heavily soiled loads will not clean properly.

    The Final Verdict

So, here is the question you have been waiting for, which one really dominates? In my opinion, I have to lean towards the front load washer. I think water conservation is a big thing, and if everyone had a front load, a lot less water would be wasted washing clothes. This coupled with the fact that it is much gentler on my clothes, is enough to push me over the edge. Go the front load.

The two biggest problems with front loaders is that the door jam gets doesn't dry all the way so you have to leave the door open so it doesn't get all moldy. It is also hard on your back if you have to do a lot of laundry.

Top loaders tend to be harder on your clothes because of the agitator. I think front loaders are less harsh on the clothes.

I would have to say I am a fan of Maytag or Whirlpool. I haven't had a good of luck with long term use of other brands. That's what I would recommend!
Front loading washers are more gentle on clothes, since they don't have that center spindle that (in my experience) always seems to get clothes tangled during washing. Front loaders are often much more energy efficient - they agitate by gravity rather than centrifugal force. Front loaders are also use much less water, since they don't have to fill up to a certain level to cover the clothing - because they tumble, everything gets saturated using less water.

I've never owned a European brand of washing machine, but I'm very pleased with my Kenmore.

Also, check with your city government's energy or conservation department. My city offers rebates on efficient appliances.
as an appliance repairman top loaders are cheaper and better to get. the repairs on top loaders are cheaper also.

front loaders have a rubber gasket on the front to hold water in the tub. that can easily be punctured by things left in clothing during wash. personally i would get one myself only because i can fix them.
    Pros to front loaders

    1. easier to remove clothes to your basket....

    2. space saver if you purchase mountable washer/dryer..

    Cons

    1. if you are short you might need a stool to get to dryer...

How important is it to use the cleaner for the front loading washers?

If you mean some proprietary product to keep your machine smelling fresh, it sounds unnecessary; after all each washing cycle does that..and cleaning the powder trays is easily done by hand. It depends on the model and make. Average is about $100 dollars each. Higher quality ones can go for $200-$250 ones. But you also have to consider how many years old they are too. Also, how much does it cost to advertise them or are you going to put a poster up in the local shopping center? Realize that its a pain in the neck for someone to move them is import too. Title says it, how do you trick the machine into believing you have put down quarters? String? hair pin? q-tip?How do you manipulate washers and dryers with those coin slots where you drop down quarters?
I used to work around slot machines for nine years in Atlantic City and believe they will NOT accept anything that is not a real coin.As for stringing, there are obtics that tilt the machine if the coin goes backwards or too slow too fast etc. Then you're caught.

Then what are you going to do to explain that string in the coin slot?

The slot machine will get in the end anyway. If you find one that accepts the slug coins (highly unlikly) and unless you find a machine that it's hopper is full you are likely to get some of slugs back in your payout because if the hopper is low it takes coins from you to keep it level.Coin Redemption gives you nothing for slugs.

You can get brass blanks. Get some 1'; round stock of brass c36000. Take it to a machinist but don't tell him what it is for. Tell him you need 100 pieces machined to a 0.954'; OD (+/- 0.002';) by 0.067'; Thick (+/- 0.002';). Order more when needed.

I have a machinist that makes them in batches of 100 or 500 for me. If I get 100 they are $1.53 a piece, but if I get 500 they are just $0.97:-)

i have a kenmore front loader and i think it's more energy efficient, quieter and won't hurt your back.

they also have a lot of options you can choose in regards of washing and drying clothes.

consider the size of your family, if there's a lot of you guys or you have a lot of loads at a time, you may consider buying a front loader because of its capacity to wash more loads.

also check if it has an energy star, most of them do. most of these frontloader washers uses high efficiency detergents. so check the available detergents with ';he';. one thing i like is that there's a compartment which you can put the soap, oxi clean , softener and bleach so you won't have to wait to put the softener in.

my washer doesn't have a steam but it has ';touch up'; which can smooth wrinkles out. ireall don't care about it because i iron some of clothes.

the front loaders are also huge, they may not fit the space if you have an older white toploader. so consider checking your space too.

try to ask the salesperson about the products, when i bought mine in sears the lady told me about the pros and cons of each product they carry. they won't oblige to buy but rather they will lay it out to you and then you decide.

Good for you! Cold water does save on the energy used to wash, as does HE. You can also continue your green quest by using earth friendly detergents made for HE. We use Seventh Generation and also Earth Friendly ECOS detergents. They do a great job in cold water, HE, pleasant mild scent, and good for the water supply. Hope you find something you like. What is the best detergent to use with high efficiency washers?
They sell specific HE detergent, even Tide coldwater now. I get mine at K-mart, but Wal-Mart and Target etc. probably sell it.

Do the high-efficiency washers and dryers actually use less water than the standard ones?

I've heard that the newer, bigger high-efficience front loading washers and dryers actually use less water than the standard washers/dryers. Is this true? How is this possible?Do the high-efficiency washers and dryers actually use less water than the standard ones?
Yes indeed, it really saves water. My bill before my HE top- loading washer (Kenmore oasis) was around $140 every 3 months for a family of 5 washing twice a week. Now since I brought the Oasis my water bill is around $70 every 3 months still washing twice a week. It does not matter if it is a top or front loading washer if it says HE you will be saving water.

    Now for the How?

There are two types of HE washers – front loading and top loading.

Although each works via a different mechanical method, they both use considerably less water than traditional agitator washers.

Environmentally-speaking, HE washers are great news! In front-loading washers, the laundry tumbles back and forth through the water, as the tub rotates clockwise and then counterclockwise, moving the water and detergent through each garment and removing soils. This repetitive tumbling motion is intended to do an efficient cleaning and rinsing job and is gentle on fabrics. There are a growing number of HE washers that load from the top. These washers offer gentle motion to do the laundry, using spinning, rotating, and/or “wobbling” wheels, plates, or disks to achieve the gentle wash action. As with some front-loading HE washers, some top-loaders also spray or lightly shower clothes using re-circulated water from wash and/or rinse solutions.

Here is a tip go to Sears to buy HE detergent you will get more bang for your buck. I buy 26lbs or 275 load of HE detergent(powder) for $26 sometime $15 if on sale which is most of the time. It last me for 5 to 6 month washing 3 lg loads (Kenmore oasis lg capacity) a week for a family of 5 (me, hubby and 3 active kids) I use 1-2 scoops per load depends on the stain and the liquid is cheaper than Name brands and cleans just as good if not better.Do the high-efficiency washers and dryers actually use less water than the standard ones?
it doesn't matter...water is a renewable resource...it recycles itself! Stop worrying about saving water! (unless you're just worried about saving money) Report Abuse

Actually some places don't really have water jon so they have good reason to try to lower water usage. I'm lucky enough to live where water is plentiful, but I can see the issue in the areas like Arizona. This really didn't say how the machines safe water though. Report Abuse

yes - water effecient..... but they smell. keep em cleaned often Report Abuse

Yes it saves money on soap and saves on water. I haven't had to buy more soap for months because you only need about 1 tbl. of soap per full load of wash in a HE washer. Doesn't matter what brand you buy they all seem to work just as well. I suggest Kenmore at Sears because it costs less Report Abuse

Also dont buy soap at Sears or any department store. Buy soap at wholesale clubs or walmart. Most soaps now will say HE on them which means good for front loaders. I use All and Clorox 2 and regular clorox bleach for whites in the front load washer. All and clorox 2 has HE on it. Report Abuse

It's true that they save water and clean exceptionally well; the wash cycles take forever and while I save money on water I definitely pay more for electricity. I'd rather have the standard washer and know that the load will be done in 20-30 minutes precisely. Report Abuse

Yeah, they use less water and they don't get your clothes nearly as clean as a conventional washer. If you put half the clothes in there as you would in a conventional washer, they will smell nasty when they are done. They ';suck';! Report Abuse

I have Staber Washing Machine, it's top load washing machine that tumbles clothes gently, for longer clothing life. High speed final spin draws out most of the water, low electrical use to. Staber.com only 1 ounce of soap w/each load.

ThorAppliances.com is lowest electrical if electric dryer used Report Abuse

Omfg, Summer isn't kidding, those things take about an hour!!! My landlady got one and I freaking hate it. It doesn't even have a ';load size'; option! I think it may be kind of an old model though, so hopefully they improve them in the future. Report Abuse

Ours takes forever to wash, wasting electricity. The water is 'recycled' so your clothes are often not clean unless you wash 3x (which defeats the water saving purpose.) If you have allergies, don't. It's a big disaster in our house. Report Abuse

Top and Front Loader high efficiency loaders do use less water. They actually fill up the washer just to wear the clothes are all wet and a little extra water instead of filling water all the way to to the top of the washing machine. I have a Kenmore Elite HE Top Loader washer . It works great. The washer rings out the clothes great so they use less drying time. In my old washer, the clothes would be soaked and take forever to dry. I have heard that Front Loaders clean better but they always tend to get a mildewy smell. My friend has a Front Loader and hers always has a strange smell. You should try out the HE washers!
Front load washers have always used less water than top loaders, a lot less. I've got a newer high efficiency front loader and it puts in just enough water to wet the clothes and a little extra - it's amazing how little water is used! Clothes get less wear and tear in front loaders too, so they last longer.

How much impact do washers and dryers have on electricity bills if you only wash one load of clothes per week?

And if washers/dryers do have a large impact on electric bills, what would you recommend I buy (I am looking to buy a new washer/dryer set)? I am looking for something affordable...How much impact do washers and dryers have on electricity bills if you only wash one load of clothes per week?
Aside from ac's, heaters, and refrigerators, washers and dryers are some of the biggest consumers of energy. I have a front loader that is very energy efficient while it cost more to purchase I will say that it uses a third of the water (saving on the water bill) because it uses so much less water it therefore uses much less detergent (which saves even more) and it also has a spin cycle that gets my clothes to where they are just damp coming out of the washer as opposed to being wet most current dryers have a moisture sensor that shuts off when the clothes get to a certain dryness and then they just tumble dry. Because of the high spin of the washer the dryer does not have as long of a dry cycle which is the most expense part of laundry. Depending on the amount of laundry you do and the cost of energy and water in your area it could pay to find a efficient front loader with a high speed spin cycle.

Using a manual eyelet tool to insert washers into shower curtains?

I recently purchased an eyelet tool and wahshers to put in my showert cortain to hang it up. It is a Prym Sewing extra large eyelet tool which I picked up at Wal Mart.

the instructions arent very clear to me, and Ive never used this tool before. If anyone has used this before or knows hoew to, help is very much appreciated.Using a manual eyelet tool to insert washers into shower curtains?
first you have to mark where you want the eyelets to be then you have to puncture a small hole in the fabric. put the round peice in the hole and put the steel rod on top of it and whack it gently with a hammer. the round washer will spread and flatten and work for your shower curtain.hope i explained this so you can understand.Using a manual eyelet tool to insert washers into shower curtains?
    How obscure!

If it is what I think it is, the eyelets (washers) are two parts. One part is mostly flat, and the other has a little bit of a very short 'tube' that projects up from the middle.

(Yep, I just checked thier website) For the largest ones, they say you need to use a hammer with the tool.

You lay the bottom half of the eyelet on a firm surface, place the fabric over it, and insert the second half of the eyelet on top.

Keeping it all firmly together, position the tool over the top piece and strike it firmly - sometimes two or three times. This will both push the tube through the material, as well as flaring it out and curlling it over, effectively locking the two metal pieces together, with the cloth between them.

Definitely practice on some scrap cloth first.

    Good Luck

    Mike

I would love help if anyone has experienced this problem as well. How to clean mold and mildew from front load washers?
Yes, I have experience with this problem and I am familiar with a new washer cleaner called affresh. You can find the cleaner at your local Home Depot, Best Buy, Lowe's or even online at affresh.com.

The affresh power puck tablets use oxygenated bubbling action to penetrate hard-to-reach areas and quickly lift away residue. sturdy grit grabber cloths are specially designed to help remove odor-causing residue from parts of your washer that are within your reach - like the rubber door seal. you could put bleach on it and allow it to soak.. the bleach will kill the mold and mildew. make sure to protect you floor.. you may have to remove the rubber and soak it in bleach water or even lysol w/ bleach to get rid of the stains..

    Good luck..
Use a cleaner that has bleach in it. From this point on though, make sure to just dry that part (with a towel you're about to throw in the washer) to eliminate the mold/mildew from starting again.
Mix 10% bleach in water (1:10 ratio) and wipe (don't spray) with a rag. Should take care of it.
I would try Clorox Spray Bleech in the bottle. I use it around the house in the areas I can and it works great.
    hot water and bleach
