I own a three family home, making separate hookups for all floors. I was hoping to tap into the existing pvc, save some money and hook up drains for the other two washers. in the odd chance that two (maybe three) washers drain at the same time, will 1 1/2'; pipe handle it?Can 1 1/2 inch pvc handle the capacty of three washers?
No sorry. I would recommend 3 inch minimum. Not to mention building code. The fact that their in three locations does make it easier but the short version is you risk floodng the bottom 2 levels. Can 1 1/2 inch pvc handle the capacty of three washers?
No it will not. A washer is considered 5 fixture units and an 1.5 inch pipe will handle just that alone. Try to find a larger drain pipe closer to your proposed installation (at least a 3';).
Stand the pipe off of the main and install a drain tee standing up and a 3'; TRAP with a minimum of a 24'; rise out of the trap but make sure it is above 42'; off of the floor to keep from siphoning the washers out. From the top of the tee you can install a bushing down to 1.5 and vent the washers with an 1.5'; pipe ran thru the roof 10'; above the roof line and properly flashed.
Not in the State of Wisconsin (don't know the code for other states). Also what are you going to do about venting the drains? A lot of people do not realize the importance of properly vented drains.
Call your local inspector and ask him what the required size would be. Maybe it is allowed in your area.
if the washer drains into a laundry tub then into a drain there should be no problem. if it drains in to a standpipe directly, to washers draining a the same might be two much and back up and overflow
it'll handle one at a time, not three at a time
