I am building my first computer and I do not want to damage my new motherboard.Does anybody have any advice on doing this ?Should I use cardboard washers when installing a motherboard ?
Normally, the case you buy should include some kind of washers or these little pegs that allow your motherboard to be slightly off the side panel.Should I use cardboard washers when installing a motherboard ?
If you need to use washers as stand offs, or whatever; I would invest in a nylon or phenolic washer, rather than cardboard. Cardboard can absorb water over time and deteriorate.
Remember that the metal mounting points act as grounding points as well, so do not insulate the motherboard from the case by using all nylon parts or phenolic parts. At least some of the mounts should be brass or steel to allow for a good case ground.
I've installed many mother boards and I have never heard of using washers. The board and/or case should have a handful of small brass screws with screw holes in the top (does that make sense). You align these in the case to match the screw holes in the motherboard, then screw the motherboard to these brass holders.
Touch the PSU to ground yourself.
No. There is no electrical contact around the screw holes. It's perfectly safe to use a bare screw. If you're still worried, all Asus motherboards come with foam washers to put on the motherboard. They're totally unnecessary though.
Assuming that your case is already equipped with stand-offs (little brass or steel columns that project from the surface of your case and prevent your motherboard from making contact with it [ and thus shorting it out]) you shouldn't need to use any washers.
The metalic areas around the screw holes on your motherboard are connected to electrical ground via a conductor in the substrate of the moterboard, and should be allowed to create a complete circuit (via the screws and the standoffs) with the rest of the case (it is good safety practice to have your entire case grounded).
That being said, you can use cardboard washers if you really want to. It won't affect the performance of your motherboard or the rest of your computer, but it will be more trouble than it is worth, in my opinion.
Buy a ground strap at radioshack just to prevent you from ESD (electrostatic discharge).
Also if you are really that worried you can use readily available plastic washers.
you should not have to use cardboard washer, are you talking about seating your motherboard? the case should be prepared for you to do this otherwise the washers are kind of built into the screw holes of the mobo
