I've heard that the newer, bigger high-efficience front loading washers and dryers actually use less water than the standard washers/dryers. Is this true? How is this possible?Do the high-efficiency washers and dryers actually use less water than the standard ones?
Yes indeed, it really saves water. My bill before my HE top- loading washer (Kenmore oasis) was around $140 every 3 months for a family of 5 washing twice a week. Now since I brought the Oasis my water bill is around $70 every 3 months still washing twice a week. It does not matter if it is a top or front loading washer if it says HE you will be saving water.
Now for the How?
There are two types of HE washers – front loading and top loading.
Although each works via a different mechanical method, they both use considerably less water than traditional agitator washers.
Environmentally-speaking, HE washers are great news! In front-loading washers, the laundry tumbles back and forth through the water, as the tub rotates clockwise and then counterclockwise, moving the water and detergent through each garment and removing soils. This repetitive tumbling motion is intended to do an efficient cleaning and rinsing job and is gentle on fabrics. There are a growing number of HE washers that load from the top. These washers offer gentle motion to do the laundry, using spinning, rotating, and/or “wobbling” wheels, plates, or disks to achieve the gentle wash action. As with some front-loading HE washers, some top-loaders also spray or lightly shower clothes using re-circulated water from wash and/or rinse solutions.
Here is a tip go to Sears to buy HE detergent you will get more bang for your buck. I buy 26lbs or 275 load of HE detergent(powder) for $26 sometime $15 if on sale which is most of the time. It last me for 5 to 6 month washing 3 lg loads (Kenmore oasis lg capacity) a week for a family of 5 (me, hubby and 3 active kids) I use 1-2 scoops per load depends on the stain and the liquid is cheaper than Name brands and cleans just as good if not better.Do the high-efficiency washers and dryers actually use less water than the standard ones?
it doesn't matter...water is a renewable resource...it recycles itself! Stop worrying about saving water! (unless you're just worried about saving money) Report Abuse
Actually some places don't really have water jon so they have good reason to try to lower water usage. I'm lucky enough to live where water is plentiful, but I can see the issue in the areas like Arizona. This really didn't say how the machines safe water though. Report Abuse
yes - water effecient..... but they smell. keep em cleaned often Report Abuse
Yes it saves money on soap and saves on water. I haven't had to buy more soap for months because you only need about 1 tbl. of soap per full load of wash in a HE washer. Doesn't matter what brand you buy they all seem to work just as well. I suggest Kenmore at Sears because it costs less Report Abuse
Also dont buy soap at Sears or any department store. Buy soap at wholesale clubs or walmart. Most soaps now will say HE on them which means good for front loaders. I use All and Clorox 2 and regular clorox bleach for whites in the front load washer. All and clorox 2 has HE on it. Report Abuse
It's true that they save water and clean exceptionally well; the wash cycles take forever and while I save money on water I definitely pay more for electricity. I'd rather have the standard washer and know that the load will be done in 20-30 minutes precisely. Report Abuse
Yeah, they use less water and they don't get your clothes nearly as clean as a conventional washer. If you put half the clothes in there as you would in a conventional washer, they will smell nasty when they are done. They ';suck';! Report Abuse
I have Staber Washing Machine, it's top load washing machine that tumbles clothes gently, for longer clothing life. High speed final spin draws out most of the water, low electrical use to. Staber.com only 1 ounce of soap w/each load.
ThorAppliances.com is lowest electrical if electric dryer used Report Abuse
Omfg, Summer isn't kidding, those things take about an hour!!! My landlady got one and I freaking hate it. It doesn't even have a ';load size'; option! I think it may be kind of an old model though, so hopefully they improve them in the future. Report Abuse
Ours takes forever to wash, wasting electricity. The water is 'recycled' so your clothes are often not clean unless you wash 3x (which defeats the water saving purpose.) If you have allergies, don't. It's a big disaster in our house. Report Abuse
Top and Front Loader high efficiency loaders do use less water. They actually fill up the washer just to wear the clothes are all wet and a little extra water instead of filling water all the way to to the top of the washing machine. I have a Kenmore Elite HE Top Loader washer . It works great. The washer rings out the clothes great so they use less drying time. In my old washer, the clothes would be soaked and take forever to dry. I have heard that Front Loaders clean better but they always tend to get a mildewy smell. My friend has a Front Loader and hers always has a strange smell. You should try out the HE washers!
Front load washers have always used less water than top loaders, a lot less. I've got a newer high efficiency front loader and it puts in just enough water to wet the clothes and a little extra - it's amazing how little water is used! Clothes get less wear and tear in front loaders too, so they last longer.
