What's the deal with the pedestals for front loading washers and dryers?

Do I need to buy the pedestals that are extra with the new models of front loading washers and dryers? I've seen on some models that they help with the vibrating, which for some models can be pretty rocky. What's the deal with the pedestals for front loading washers and dryers?
Those things are expensive and not very sturdy. They do raise the height of the machines, which is helpful if you have a bad back. Their main purpose is storage.

If you know a cabinet maker, he could build you something sturdier for less or about the same price. What's the deal with the pedestals for front loading washers and dryers?
Vibrating? Never heard of that, but I guess it could be true.

They are partly for looks ... partly for added storage ... but mostly I think to raise the washer and dryer up a bit ... wet laundry is HEAVY and it's much easier to unload the washer and load the dryer if you don't have to break your back doing so!

You don't actually NEED to buy the pedestals ... but if you don't, I bet you'll wish you had!
my moms machine has that. it helps her back because it raises it up. also shes a neat freak and can hide away all the detergent in it.

you don't have to buy it, but you might like it if you did. depends on what you need. if you have a laundry room with cabinets its really not worth it. our machine is in the garage
From what I was told, it was used for storage and to raise the unit up so that you don't have to bend so far down.

:-)
Easier on the back!

More expense!
