How did the dual-action auger style agitators become so popular for top load clothes washers?

I never saw anything wrong with the standard post agitators as long as I didn't overload the tub, and they didn't take up as much space in the tub because they didn't have auger fins. How did the dual-action auger style agitators become so popular for top load clothes washers?
The new agitators were intended to move the clothes through the water more aggressively for better cleaning. I would also bet they are cheaper to manufacture than the previous ones.

Note that this has nothing to do with the front load ';energy saving'; washers which don't need much effort to get the clothes moving through the water because they use gravity for that action. They are an overpriced scam caused by congress not thinking through the consequences of legislation intended to save energy. How did the dual-action auger style agitators become so popular for top load clothes washers?
Because of the simple reliable design.

I am not a fan of the ';new'; front loaders we were forced into for ';energy savings'; because the added complexity and mechanical losses built into the design. Ever study the power flow in a front load washer? Maybe you are saving water, but the increased parts counts and extra manufacturing required to produce them requires more resources of the environment than previous models. Not to mention the facts of not lasting as long; and needing more repairs during its lifetime.

Imagine filling landfills with the older models because the government says it is obsolete and parts can no longer be manufactured. Makes no sense to me. Another big scam in my opinion.
